What to Expect

Cate McGraw with Littleton back pain patient.Whether you are following up a visit to the ER or urgent care, or you haven’t been seen for your pain yet, we’re here to help. Within 5 days of requesting an appointment, you will meet with a spine specialist who will provide you with the following:

  • Physical Exam, including time to listen closely to what you’ve been
    experiencing, what you’ve tried and what you hope to achieve

  • Provocative testing (where we gently manipulate your body) to help
    diagnose or rule out particular common causes of pain

  • Review of current spine imaging (X-rays, MRIs), or referral for imaging

  • Referral for all appropriate conservative treatments you have not tried:

    • Physical Therapy

    • Spinal Injections

    • Chiropractic Care, Massage and Other Holistic Care

  • Consultation by a board-certified interventional pain management
    physician or board-certified neurosurgeon if you have already tried all
    appropriate conservative treatments without relief

  • Scheduled follow-up visit to assess results of initial recommendations and
    plan for next steps

    We see patients who are experiencing pain or weakness in their back, legs, neck or arms. We see patients who have been referred for follow-up care from the ER or urgent care, and we also see patients who need immediate help for their pain but don’t want to go to the ER or urgent care.

    We see patients for all conditions, including:

    • Sudden back or neck pain

    • Pain after lifting or bending

    • Stiffness or limited mobility

    • Pain that’s interfering with work, sleep or activities of daily living

    • Back or neck pain from an unknown cause

    • Back or neck pain that has assessed as non-emergency in the ER or urgent care
  • Who will I be seen by at the Littleton Acute Back & Neck Pain Clinic?

    You will be seen by an advanced practice provider (APP), either a certified nurse practitioner or physician assistant, who has extensive expertise in the management of back and neck pain. Your APP will conduct your initial assessment and can prescribe medications, injections, and make referrals for additional treatment.

  • What treatments are available at the Littleton Acute Back & Neck Pain Clinic?

    Every person who experiences back or neck pain is immediately evaluated for any conditions and red flag symptoms that requires immediate surgery. Patients who do not need emergency spine surgery but are in acute pain may be treated with medication, spinal injections and referred to physical therapy and other conservative treatments. Every patient is assessed to determine if interventional pain management or spine surgery is needed.

  • What are the benefits of being seen in the Littleton Acute Back & Neck Pain Clinic?

    Most emergency rooms and urgent care clinics are designed to rule out life-threatening conditions, not to diagnose or treat non-emergency spine problems.
