The Functional Neurosurgical Ambulatory Surgery Center (FNASC) is owned and operated by the Denver DBS Center and Littleton Adventist Hospital to provide more convenient, easier care to patients receiving deep brain stimulation to help control symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. FNASC is located in Littleton, a southern suburb of Denver, with direct highway access from Denver International Airport without the need to travel through Downtown Denver.
FNASC is an outpatient center in Littleton, Colo., that provides same-day DBS generator placement and DBS generator programming. FNASC also offers DBS generator replacement and DBS reprogramming, no matter what location or what state the patient’s initial DBS surgery was performed.

Outpatient DBS generator placement
Deep brain stimulation was approved by the FDA in 2002 and has since helped more than 100,000 patients. However, it has mostly been performed in a manner that requires patients to be awake during the procedure. In 2012, landmark studies showed that the procedure could be equally or more effectively performed with the patient asleep.
Neurosurgeon Dr. David VanSickle, founder and medical director of Denver DBS Center, was the region’s first neurosurgeon to offer patients the option of robot-assisted Asleep DBS. Today, the Denver DBS Center performs more robot-assisted Asleep DBS procedures than any other center in the nation.
Deep brain stimulation is performed in two phases. Dr. VanSickle performs the first phase, in which the leads are implanted in the brain, at Littleton Adventist Hospital in Littleton, Colo. Patients may remain in the hospital for one or more days following the surgery.
For the second phase, patients return approximately a week after the initial procedure, this time to the Functional Neurosurgical Ambulatory Surgery Center located less than 1 mile from the Littleton Adventist Hospital. During the second phase, a miniature generator is implanted under the skin of the chest in a short, outpatient procedure. Programming and testing of the DBS is done at that time. The second phase to implant and program the generator is a minimally invasive procedure that takes about 90 minutes. Most patients can go home immediately after the procedure. Most patients will see their neurologist several days after the second phase is completed.
DBS generator replacement
In addition, generators can be replaced at FNASC, regardless of whether the original generator was placed by the Denver DBS Center or another neurosurgical program. Replacement is recommended every three to five years. Reprogramming also is performed at FNASC, again regardless of where the initial DBS programming was performed.
