Stacey Buchan, MSBS, PA-C
Stacey received her Masters of Science in Biomedical Sciences, Physician Assistant from the University of Toledo. She has a particular interest in Gerontological practice. She is always engaged in continuing medical education so she can stay on the cutting edge of medical treatment advancements.
Chelsea Carruthers, MPAS, PA-C
Chelsea Carruthers was born and raised in upstate New York. For her undergraduate degree, she attended the University of Vermont where she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology. She then moved to sunny south Florida, where she attended Nova Southeastern University to obtain her master’s degree in physician assistant studies. She remained in Florida and began working in neurosurgery at Cleveland Clinic- Weston. She worked in the inpatient, outpatient, and surgical settings -- where she grew to love the specialty and patient care. Chelsea loves being a PA as she is able to connect with patients and provide compassionate care during their times of need. She has a love for outdoor activities, including hiking, running, and snowboarding, which made her decision to move to Colorado an easy one.
Michael Coyle, PA-C
Michael Coyle was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. He earned his bachelor in biology at Ave Maria University in Naples, Fl. While attending Ave Maria, he was the head of a bio-chemical research group for two years. He then went on to spend a year working with patients at the largest ophthalmology group in Jacksonville, Florida. This was the time where he developed his love and care for his patient and taking the time to always treat them as family. He then went on to get his Masters of Medical Science at Nova Southeastern University. His first job out of training was with a busy spine neurosurgical practice based out of Jacksonville, Florida. The group that he was associated with working both in-patient and out-patient setting. It was in this job that he was able to find his love and passion for taking care of some of the most complex patients. Patient's that have dealt with back pain for just a few days, all of the way to ones that have had pain for more than twenty years. He realizes that Neurosurgery is not just the art of operating, but it is the art of caring for our patients in the most well rounded and complete way possible. As a surgical APP, his primary role will be to help and assist his surgeon provide the best quality care that can be provided to there patients. In his free time, he likes to spent time with his family, enjoying the peacefulness of sunsets and sunrises, traveling, and playing golf and basketball.
Patricia A. Freeman, BS, PA-C, NCCPA
Patricia A. Freeman has been a licensed physician assistant since 1992, after graduating with honors from University of Florida. Her first career position was at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, in the Plastic Surgery Department. She moved back to her birth state of Colorado with her awesome husband and four children in 1993. Patricia has been a surgical and clinical Physician Assistant (PA) for the past 26 years, working in the areas of Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery, Orthopedic Spine Surgery and currently in Neurosurgery for over 8 years. She thoroughly enjoys reading any type of well written literature and she also loves everything about the Colorado mountains. She is an enthusiastic skier, snowshoer, hiker and she is currently learning how to paddle board. Patricia is not particularly good at any of these sports but she loves to be outdoors. Her pure joy is her interactions with her patients and being given the honor of their trust to medically treat them alongside of Dr. David VanSickle.
Jamie Henry, MSN, APN, FNP-C, HNB-BC, CNRN
Jamie is a Nurse Practitioner who specializes in the care of our neurosurgical outpatients. She has spent much of her career in the neurosurgical setting, and joined Neurosurgery One after moving to Colorado in 2016. Jamie graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Xavier University in 2006, and became a board-certified Holistic Nurse that year as well—a certification she keeps active and continues to incorporate into her daily practice. She graduated with her Master’s in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner from Walden University in 2015, with a 4.0 GPA. Jamie is also a board-certified Neuroscience Nurse.
Jamie is often involved in the care of patients from initial assessment and diagnosis, through their post-operative follow up visits, and anywhere in between. She has a passion for individualized, patient-centered care, and is dedicated to empowering patients and their families through education, collaboration, open communication, and maintaining a therapeutic healing environment. She strives to ensure our patients and their families feel well-prepared before, during, and after neurosurgical procedures.
Jamie is an active member of multiple professional organizations and academic honor societies, including the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Holistic Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and Golden Key International Honor Society.
Laine Housand, MPAS, PA-C
Laine was born and raised in Southern California and earned her bachelor's degree in biological sciences at University of California, Irvine. She went on to work in spinal cord injury research for five years, which was what ultimately helped her fall in love with the brain, spine, and neurosurgery as a whole. After moving to the east coast to attend physician assistant school at Rutgers University in New Jersey, she worked as a neurosurgery PA for two years in Virginia. Her family recently relocated here to Colorado and she believes they are here to stay. Laine loves being a PA because she enjoys working together with patients, helping them improve their health and lives, and she takes great honor in being given the opportunity to be there for people in some of their most vulnerable moments. In her free time, she likes to spend time with her husband, daughter, and dog, practice yoga, and explore the outdoors.
Mark Hugo, MPAS, PA-C
Mark Hugo was born and raised in Lincoln, Neb. He earned his bachelor’s degree in nutrition science from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. After college, he spent two years working as a perioperative assistant where he developed a passion for surgery and patient care. During this time, he spent many hours shadowing a neurosurgery physician assistant, which led him to pursue a career as a surgical PA. Mark earned his master’s of physician assistant studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He relocated to Colorado following PA school and started employment with NeurosurgeryOne. He conducts neurosurgical examinations, assists Dr. J. Adair Prall in surgery, and provides pre- and post-operative care. His goal is to provide comprehensive patient evaluation, education, and individualized care to optimize patient outcomes. In his free time, Mark enjoys golfing, hiking, bicycling, skiing, and cheering on the Huskers.
Nermin Imsirovic, PA-C
Nermin Imsirovic was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and moved to New Orleans in 1995. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University, and obtained his Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Midwestern University. His first job as a Physician Assistant was at a busy neurosurgery trauma center in Western Colorado where he assisted with various elective and trauma surgical procedures, performed neurosurgical procedures and took care of critically ill patients on the ICU/neuro floors, and was involved with an elective clinic where he evaluated and treated patients with various neurosurgical disorders. Upon moving to the Denver area, he also gained experience in orthopedic trauma surgery and procedures, as well as further neurosurgical experience that also involved extensive peripheral nerve training. He believes that each patient’s condition is unique and a diagnosis should not be performed via a sole modality such as diagnostic imaging, but rather through a complete picture that involves the patient’s history and personal goals, anatomy, physical exam, and additional diagnostics tests specific to the patient’s condition. Through his role at Neurosurgery One at St. Anthony Hospital, his primary role is to care for patients in the medical/surgical units as well as critical neuro/trauma patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In his free time, Nermin enjoys spending time with his family, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, as well as playing tennis and basketball.
Anna Jackson, MPAS, PA-C
Anna Jackson is a board-certified Physician Assistant specializing in neurosurgical care. Anna primarily works in our clinic, focusing on both pre- and post-operative care. She enjoys working with patients to develop an effective treatment plan that is individualized to each patient's concerns.
Anna received her Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from Butler University and Biomedical Sciences from Grand Valley State University. She is a member of Pi Alpha Honor Society. Anna lives in the Denver area and enjoys all outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing.
Cate McGraw, MS, APN, ANP-C
Cate McGraw is a board-certified adult nurse practitioner specializing in neurosurgery. Cate received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from University of Northern Colorado. As a bedside nurse, she cared for patients with acute spinal cord and brain injury at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado. While working at Craig, she obtained her master’s degree from University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Following her graduation, she worked for National Jewish in both the in- and outpatient pulmonary settings as well as critical care. She has been a member of American Nurses Association and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners for the last 10 years. She is active in SIG 30 (the advanced practice section of Colorado) and served as the treasurer from 2012 to 2014.
Cate is a Colorado native who enjoys exploring the outdoors with her husband and twin boys.
Jolene Mirabella is a proud Colorado native born in Masonville, CO. For her undergraduate degree she studied Molecular Biology, English, and Secondary Education at The University of Colorado at Boulder. She then worked for 5 years in Healthcare IT before realizing her desire for a career in medicine. She obtained her Master’s of Medical Science and Physician Assistant studies from Red Rocks Physician Assistant School in Lakewood, CO. Her love for neurosurgery and neurosurgical patients began in Boulder where she spent 4.5 years working at Boulder Neurosurgical and Spine Associates in outpatient, inpatient, and clinical settings. She then worked at The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Transplant Surgery where she expanded her medical foundation working in critical care settings. A passion for neurosurgical patients brought her back to Neurosurgery One. She is constantly amazed by the strength neurosurgical patients have to get them through extremely difficult situations and believes in providing care that is compassionate, personal, and dedicated to reaching her patients’ goals. As a surgical APP, her primary role is to assist her surgeon both in and out of the operating room in order to provide the best care possible. In her free time, you can find her running on the trails, competing in endurance races, skiing, gardening, and enjoying all things Colorado.
Kelly Boals Mosher, BSN, RN
Kelly Boals Mosher was raised in Michigan and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Ferris State University. She was a hospital bedside nurse in her hometown of Coldwater Michigan working with adult and pediatric preoperative and postoperative surgical patients. Kelly moved to Colorado in 2018 and began working with Neurosurgery One as our Nurse Navigator. She has a passion for patient education. Kelly teaches our preoperative surgical spine class in preparation for cervical and lumbar surgery and is the program coordinator for our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program. Her goal is to be an advocate and resource for her patients throughout their pre and postoperative surgical experience. Kelly enjoys being outside in nature, horseback riding and watching sports with her husband and three children.
Kelly Mowrey, MS, APN, ANP-C
Kelly Mowrey is a Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner with Neurosurgery One, specializing in the acute, inpatient management of patients with neurosurgical conditions. Before joining Neurosurgery One, Kelly worked in pulmonary medicine at National Jewish Health for 14 years. In this role, Kelly managed acute and chronic pulmonary conditions for patients with traumatic brain and spinal cord injury at the world-renowned Craig Hospital. Additionally, she managed chronic respiratory failure in patients with ALS at the Colorado Neurological Institute and was a spinal cord injury nurse practitioner and registered nurse at Craig Hospital.
Kelly has co-authored a chapter on the nursing management of spinal cord injured patients in a prominent Neurotrauma textbook and published an article regarding evaluating acute abdomen in a spinal cord injured patient in a neuroscience nursing journal.
Kelly graduated with high honors from the University of Colorado School of Nursing in 2005 with a Master’s degree in nursing and an Adult Nurse Practitioner degree. Her nurse practitioner training included a 3 month intensive practicum in Neurosurgery at Denver Health Medical Center. Kelly is passionate about the role of nutrition, specifically the use of a whole food/plant-based diet, in the prevention and treatment of disease.
Taryn Newkirk had her first exposure to medicine in Colorado Springs while working in home health care for a child with multiple congenital neurological disorders. She quickly realized that her love of helping others would require medical training. This prompted her to advance her medical knowledge first surgically as a surgical technician and continuing on to receive her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies. After graduating, she had the opportunity to work at a prestigious institution in New York City, Mount Sinai, where she worked as a hybrid Physician’s Assistant, covering all surgical specialties and eventually transitioning to vascular surgery. After working in multiple surgical specialties she decided to pursue her surgical passion, neurosurgery.
Taryn is dedicated to helping others and she strongly believes a collaborative approach results in the best outcome in patient care. She is honored to be able to assist patients during their most vulnerable times.
She is elated to be back home in Colorado working with Neurosurgery One. When she’s not working she enjoys spending time with her family, exercising, cooking, and exploring all that Colorado has to offer.
Tess O’Brien, MPAS, PA-C
Tess O'Brien grew up in Madison, Wisc., as the youngest of four. She attended Marquette University for her undergraduate Biomedical Sciences degree and her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies degree. She graduated in 2017 and soon began working with a busy independent neurosurgery practice in Milwaukee. She worked in both the inpatient and outpatient setting and grew to love being in the operating room, as well as following a patient's care from start to finish. She has regularly visited Colorado and finally made the move from the Midwest to enjoy the sunshine, mountains and all that Colorado has to offer.
Catherine Pierce, MMS, PA-C
Catherine Pierce started her career in medical research and found that she missed the human interaction and satisfaction of helping heal. She returned to school to receive her Masters of Medical Science and PA Certification. Since 2012 she has been working in inpatient medicine with a focus on neurology and neurosurgical patients. She thrives when able to connect with her patient's and hopes to make a difference in each patient's care while they are going through often some of the most difficult moments of their lives. She enjoys educating patients and families and guiding them through what can be a very confusing and frustrating process while hospitalized. Outside of work Catherine lives with her husband, two children and several dogs. She loves to cook, garden and be active and outdoors with her family.
Emily Stewart, MPH, MSPAS, PA-C
Emily Stewart grew up in Colorado Springs. She earned her Bachelor’s in biology with minors in chemistry and medical physics at the University of Denver. She attended the Colorado School of Public Health at the Anschutz Medical Campus and earned her Master’s in Public Health. She then pursued a career as a physician assistant, attending Surgical PA school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). After graduation, she worked for the Chief surgeon of the UAB Department of Neurosurgery for 5.5 years, specializing mainly in the management and treatment of brain and spinal tumors, in addition to general neurosurgical conditions. She worked very closely with neurosurgical residents, where she met and worked with Dr. Andrew Romeo for many years, and ultimately followed back to Colorado. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her two golden retrievers, snowboarding, wakeboarding, hiking, paddle boarding, traveling, and relaxing at her mountain cabin near Jefferson, CO.
